Important UADS Dates and Announcements

Sept 17: Second General Meeting.

There will be a “how to debate” workshop taking place during this meeting. There will also be practice rounds for anyone interested in debating, judging, or just watching.

Sept 24: Elections.

There will be elections for the positions of Member-at-large and Novice-member-at large on September 24 (5pm in HC 2-11). To vote or run for a position in the election you need to be a UADS member. Membership may be purchased from Dawn at any Wednesday meeting in September. The definition of the positions is as follows:

An Executive Member-at-Large, who shall:

i. be elected in September of the current term;

ii. assist all other members of the Executive Committee, especially the External Director, with the functioning of the UADS;

A Novice Executive Member-at-Large, who shall:

i. be elected in September of the current term;

ii. be a debater in their first year of university-level debate and act as a representative of those novices;

iii. assist all other members of the Executive Committee, especially the Internal Director, with the functioning of the UADS.

For more information check out the constitution.

Sept 26 and 27: Lois Hole.

The UADS will be hosting a high school tournament at the end of September called the Lois Hole tournament. It will be a two day event (Sept 26 and 27), the Friday will be workshops and the Saturday will be a tournament. We need judges for the tournament, and if anyone is interested in helping with the workshops, they should email the tournament director James Crossman or Clarissa Pearce.

Oct 4: Grant Davy’s.

On October 4, the UADS is holding an in-house tournament called Grant Davy’s. It’s only for U of A debaters. It is held in a pro-am style, meaning that novice debaters are paired randomly with experienced debaters. It’s a great way to start debating, you don’t need any experience, and it’s a lot of fun. For more information, contact Sharon Ohayon.
